Karsten
Zimmermann

*1960 Germany

Expressive colours have always been his passion. In his early childhood, Karsten Zimmerman drew and painted with charcoal and coloured pencils on paper, devoting every free minute to these hours of the muse. Even then, his love of architecture, lines and surfaces was at the heart of his creative endeavours.

These carefree experiments and the development of aesthetic principles were followed by a few years in which artistic ambitions and ideas took a back seat. But the thoughts and inspiration to become active as an artist again remained. Some time later, the opportunity arose to give it a fresh start.

Today, as a freelance artist, Karsten Zimmermann specialises in painting with acrylic on brushed stainless steel panels. His work can be classified as contemporary art, using opaque and vibrant colours, strong inner lines and a smooth alternation between perspective and boldness. When asked about his expression and motivation, the artist emphasises that it is essential to him to reach people all over the world with his large-format paintings, “to inspire them with the power of simplified motifs and a sea of dazzling colours”.

AT THE STUDIO | THE MAKING OF

Following an idea, meticulously, persistently, with an eye on the big picture – this is how Karsten Zimmerman approaches his work. Every single surface is a statement and part of an organic whole. Surface to surface, enhanced by inner lines, form a cheerful carpet that radiates power and invites you to look.

If you didn’t know that each area of colour had been individually mixed and applied by brush, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the whole motif was a technical print with the character of enamel, so precise and elegant is the application of colour.

The Presentation

The presentation of the large-format paintings is elaborate and high quality: the motifs painted on brushed stainless steel are given a three-dimensional effect employing spacers also made of stainless steel. The highlight is created above the painted motif, as the screwed spacers hold a pane of acrylic glass at a distance from the painted support. The acrylic intensifies the colour effect and provides protection. At the rear, the spacers are used for wall mounting.

ART_Aufbau

This ingenious technical construction has a brilliant lightness to it, as the elegant spacers act as fixing points to the wall, allowing the whole object to float.
